Have you ever found it challenging to get your dog to do what you want? Today we are going to show you how to train your dog effectively and get results every time.
Paying attention
Our first task is to get the dog to pay attention to us. How many times have you seen someone say their dog’s name without any response?
So say your dog’s name in a moderate voice without yelling, and if he makes eye contact, acknowledge by saying something like “Good!”, praise and reward him with a treat.
Repeat this several times, but sometimes cutting the treat.
We don’t want an overweight dog that only does things for food. When this exercise has been successful several times, we can make it more difficult by forcing the dog to pay attention longer, perhaps 15 seconds, before praising and giving a reward. If your dog approaches you to see where he is hiding his food, it is best to ignore him.
Involve friends and family
When we master this strategy, we can test it in different places and with various family members calling it by name and attracting attention. Just make sure whoever is in control praises and treats them.
Calling your dog’s name and getting a quick response every time is the first step to train your dog to do just about anything because once you have their attention, you can move on to the next step in the process: training your dog. From meals to outings, use your dog’s name whenever possible, but remember to be inexpensive with treats and possibly try to keep them to a minimum as a special reward.
