This delicious limoncello recipe is smooth and sweet with an intense lemon flavour to beat the summer heat! Comprised of lemon zest, water, alcohol, and sugar, limoncello is the Italian word referring to an intensely lemon flavoured liqueur. Moreover, Limoncello is famously associated with and produced in Sorrento, the Amalfi coast, and the island of Capri. What Alcohol to Use?
If you are able to, 100 proof vodka or even higher-proof grain alcohol is the very best to use for making limoncello. This will extract more and better lemon flavor from the peels, and makes a smoother, less cloying limoncello.
This said, 80 proof vodka is also fine to use — it’s also easier to find and less expensive than 100 proof. If you use 80 proof vodka, you won’t need to add as much sugar syrup after infusing the vodka.
Truly worth the wait, this limoncello is a tart after dinner liqueur that is wonderful especially after seafood!
- 15 Organic Lemon Peels (or 2 Pounds)
- 2 Organic Orange Peels
- 1 Quart Grain Alcohol (Or Unflavored Vodka)
- 4 Cups Sugar
- 4 Cups Water
- First, place only the coloured part of the peels of the lemons and oranges in a large bottle or container with a lid and pour the grain alcohol on top.
- Second, close with a lid and store in a dark place for 10 days to two weeks.
- After time has passed, strain the mixture well, returning it to the bottle.
- Next, in a pot, boil the sugar and water together until the sugar has completely dissolved.
- Then, cool to room temperature and then add the simple syrup mixing well.
- Finally, taste to ensure adequate sweetness and then store in the freezer or refrigerator.
- Last, serve the limoncello cool!
Since alcohol will pull everything from the lemon & orange peels, including any pesticides or insecticides used, it is crucial to use organic lemons & oranges.
